Castle Combe Rally Day

We have booked a session at Castle Combe for the Annual Rally Day. We get 4 track sessions, with other rally cars only, and 4 goes around a stage. Can’t imagine the stage is too exciting, but at least we can take friends for a drive around.

If you make it there then drop in and say hello, I am sure you will recognise the car. I think normally we are over the foot bridge, not in the main pit area – could be wrong though.

We had a great day in the end. My nephew and his girlfriend came down for the weekend. We arrived early enough but someone very important parked his truck in our space so we couldn’t set up. He must have been important as we had to wait for him to set up before he moved it.
After the car and driver had been scrutineered and signed on I took the car out with Nephew in the passenger seat. Whilst waiting to go out the low level switch in the header tank did it’s little trick and blew out. Some sticky tape/cable ties and a bottle of water later and we were good to go. Coming up to Quarry on the second lap, probably around 140-150mph, as I came off the brakes it had a little head snatch. Certainly wakes you up. Nick really enjoyed himself.
Wifey (also known as Navvy) was next, and thought track driving was a little hey ho, Sunday afternoon stuff.
Hazel(nut) was next. Mark persuaded her it was perfectly safe, but she was a little nervous. As we were queueing Hazel asked, for reassurance, that we would just be going quickly. I reassured her that we would, not too much sideways action. She also never asked was quick was, so I never told her. On the first lap I took it easy, at the end of which she said, “This is alright”, so I set off after Mr BTJ Brown in his Chevette. I clipped a kerb too heavy and we were up on two wheels, which I pointed out to Hazel before we came back down onto 4.
Mark was last, and I was talking him through lines, cornering etc so never really got to 10/10s, but good fun. I don’t think I was 10/10s all day on the track, maybe that early head shake put me off, or maybe I was conscious that mostly the people next to me were not motorsport people.
Amongst all this we did the special stage many times, which everyone enjoyed much more than the track. There is nothing like approaching a bank flat in second to make you aware of your speed, which you never really experience on a track. Also the car been thrown around and sliding just makes people smile.
Also picked up a respectable looking roof vent for sensible money, just need to fit it.
    A great day.
